Making a Pop up stand for a necklace

I know then you are first starting out trying to find good props to have your stall stand out. Be it money or the right aesthetic for your table. So I would like to share this stand for necklace that I made to be used on your pop ups or as a backdrop to when you take those photos for your social’s
Before I was a silversmith the one class's that I enjoyed other than art was DT/wood shop so lucky I had all the tools with me.
I would like to share this with everyone and to say with a little imagination and the tools you have you can make something for your shop that will be both unique and inexpensive in the long run.

Equipment

  • Balsa wood
  • Chisel
  • Soft hammer/mallet
  • Coping saw/ tenon saw
  • Sand paper
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Dowels
  • ruler/ tap measure
  • Pencil

Not required

  • Wood stain
  • Paint

1. I stained the balsa wood as I was going for more of a darker look and as you know balsa wood is a light wood it is completely up to you or if you would like to paint it any other colour to match your company colours, but keep this in mind that balsa wood is a soft wood so any stain you use will be much lighter than if it was used on hardwood. So you may need to apply multiple coats to get the effect you are looking for.

2. You need to find the center of the wood so you can cut it need half or if you need to divide it up in multiple section it is entirely up to you how long you would like it to be. For me I just divided it by two. Once I had done that I then took a coping saw to the balsa wood as it is a softwood it was fairly easy to do.

3. Next you want to make the notch at the top so the chain of the necklace and me pass through how I when about this I first divide the width in to thirds then measure from the middle for how big I wanted those notch's. Once that was done and I was happy with it I used a chisel and hammer to take out those notch's. I cleaned them up with the chisel and sandpaper. To straighten the edges up (as you can see mine were off, but it was an easy fix) An added step is to stain the wood that you cut out so it will match the rest.

4. Then you need to drill two holes into the bottom of the wood where it will be able to make it stand up. First you need to divide it to thirds make sure the marks are level before you drill it if not it won't be able to stand straight  you will need a drill bit that is a smaller then the dowel once that is done and cleaned up you will need the hammer/ mallet to put the dowel in. ( make sure the dowels are longer than you need as you can cut them to the angle that you would like)

5. you are finished with your new stand I add some extra things ie taking a flame to it and burning the wood and painting the Earth and Silver logo on the front of stand.

Try this little fun project yourself.
